Posted by Golf Local On April - 11 - 2012

If you love golf as much as we do then you know it takes time and dedication to become a solid player.  Unfortunately amateur players tend to take the driver to the range and hit multiple balls paying very little attention to the most important part – the short game.  Not that we are saying don’t practice hitting the driver, but remember that about 40 percent of a golfer’s strokes in a given round are taken on the green. So why don’t we practice this important aspect of the golf game?  It is very simple – we just do not have the time or feel that it is not important. What is Eatertainment?

Posted by Golf Local On February - 15 - 2012

Eatertainment … ever heard of that term? Probably not, but you will now. “Eatertainment” is defined as the act of eating and drinking while taking part in amusement of play.

Located in the Perinton Square Mall at the intersection of Routes 250 and 31, Golf Play Café℠ is the first “eatertainment” establishment of its kind. By combining state-of-the-art PGA Tour Simulators with delicious made-to-order food, Golf Play Café℠ appeals not only to golfers, but to non-golfers, families and business professionals.

The Golf Play Café℠ offers seating for up to 125 guests. You can enjoy a full menu for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Their made-to-order menu offers an array of appetizers, side dishes and entrees ranging in price from $5 to $19. Golf Play Café’s℠ stone pillar bar is fully stocked with your favorite domestic and imported liquors, beers or wines – many which are made right here in Upstate New York. Don’t want or have the time for an adult beverage? Don’t worry about it, they also offer organic coffees, smoothies, iced teas and fountain drinks.

Keeping with the golf theme, Golf Play Café℠ offers personal caddies that will assist you with food and beverage orders and, at the same time, get you ready to play your round at one of the 50 plus golf courses that are available. Golf Play Café℠ simulators deliver the most realistic interactive golf experience by rendering all their courses in 3D based on terrain, reference data and calibrated satellite photos. What to do during the golf off-season

Posted by Golf Local On January - 24 - 2012

All the local golf courses shut their doors and close for the season. The staff goes on vacation and there is no golf until early spring. We put the clubs away and watch golf on TV wishing that we could play every weekend.

If you love golf then you probably get really disappointed when the winter weather comes and everything golf shuts down. I know that for me it can be a very long winter not even picking up a golf club.

So what can we be doing while the cold snow falls and all the golf courses are shut down?

Indoor Video Golf

There are many local area indoor video simulators that offer a great golfing experience while we can’t take advantage of the beautiful outdoors. On the west-side of Rochester Valle Sports and Doug Miller Family Sports Park both offer indoor simulators. We here are Golf Local have even started an indoor golf league that meets Thursday night at Valle Sports.

On the east-side of Rochester near Eastview mall, Optigolf offers some great golf and also have a nice little restaurant where you can eat and purchase some drinks. They have a great choice of beer and wine. They also have many large flat screen televisions where you can watch football, golf, and basketball games. It is a great place to hangout with your buddies or kids who love the game of golf.

Golf Training

There are many options for indoor golf training in Rochester – GolfTEC, High Performance Golf, Fore Performance. We also highly recommend scheduling some time with a one on one golf instructor. Hank Haney certified Brian Jacobs is always willing to meet and go over a game plan to keep your golf swing in check in the off-season.

Purchase Golf Equipment

On the off-season is the best time to purchase any golf clubs you really wanted during the golf season. The hottest club this past year was the TaylorMade R11. Everyone wanted the club and now you can get it for close to $200 off the original price when it launched.

Just Have Fun

Other things we all love to do is watch football, go out to eat, enjoy time with friends and family. This is the perfect time to catch up on your new Call of Duty MW3 you purchased. You can have a lot of fun playing online poker with your buddies. Watch every episode of Top Gear and dream of purchasing that new Lamborghini.

Well we have a couple months to get ready for another great season of golf. Let us know what you do in the off-season.

Blue Heron Hills Golf ClubNext time you and your buddies want to play a tough course, you must play at the Blue Heron Hills Golf Club. The course is a short drive past Penfield down 441 in Macedon, NY. The course was previously a private course but became a semiprivate course in 2010. This course offers beautiful views, great golf and a friendly staff.

Blue Heron Hills Golf Club offers one of Rochester’s stiffest challenges, and here are five things you want to know before tackling this course:

1. Learn the course layout

This course is tight and you need to know each hole or you will find yourself in trouble fast. There are no parallel fairways so each hole layout is going to be unique with no forgiveness.

2. Bring plenty of golf balls

You are definitely going to need to bring plenty of extra balls with you to this course. You can either stop in at Pennfair Golf on the way to the course or pick some up in the pro shop. Many of the holes are lined by deep brush and trees. If your shot is far left or right you probably will lose your ball for good.

3. Use the driving range

Spend time on the range getting your driver and irons tuned up. Some of the fairways are generous but you cannot afford to miss them. You will need to be well positioned off the tee to avoid the trouble.

4. Pick the right club off the tee

Everyone loves to use their driver, but for this course, you might want to limit its use. Taking an iron will be more effective when trying to keep it in the fairway. When you want to hit long, you need to be more accurate with the club you choose. Make sure you also play the right set of tees. Hitting from the right tees will add to your shot considerably.

5. Take a lesson

Blue Heron has two great options for golf training – Brian J. Tolnar and Ann Pangman Esterman. Brian joined Blue Heron Hills in the past year as the General Manager and PGA Director of Golf. He has a solid background winning 27 titles and two tournaments in the Norther Ohio PGA Section. He is certified custom golf club fitter with Cobra, Nike, Ping and Titlest and is a member of the PGA. Ann Pangman Esterman is a LPGA Class A teaching and club professional and has over 12 years of teaching experience. Ann is an assistant golf coach for the women’s and men’s teams at St. John Fisher College.

Timber Ridge Golf Club – A New Beginning

Posted by Golf Local On August - 19 - 2011

Over the last few years many golf courses have come and gone, left for dead or just not maintained the way they should have been. Luckily for us new owners have stepped in and help to rejuvenate the golfing industry in the Rochester area. We now have another success story of a golf course making a comeback – Timber Ridge Golf Club in Brockport.

Timber Ridge Golf Club was recently purchase in 2011 and the new owners are bringing this course back to life. They have begun an extensive fertilization program to help green up the fairways and greens that were once neglected. The new drainage systems have help to battle all the rains we have experienced this spring. Each hole now has brand new signage with accurate yardage and a diagram of the layout of the hole.

We spoke with the new head PGA pro at Timber Ridge Tom Mulka and asked him what the biggest challenge he has faced so far was. Tom indicated that in the past potential customers would drive right by the course because it just didn’t look open. Play was down and the course was not maintained the proper way. In the past it was cash only and you couldn’t get a cart after 5pm. Well that has all changed. Timber Ridge is now taking tee times from 7am – 7pm and allowing carts out during those hours. They now take credit and debit cards and have an ATM right in the clubhouse.

Timber Ridge ownership has renovated the clubhouse and the parking lot as well. They have a fully paved parking lot with ample spaces available. They have added a new bar and grill along with an outdoor patio that now can seat up to 80 people. This is a great venue for tournaments, corporate outings or just to kick back on a nice summer day.

For the 2011 season Timber Ridge Golf Club will not be offering leagues. We were very excited to hear this. This now allows anyone to go out there and not worry they can’t play due to leagues Monday – Friday. Not many courses can’t offer open play and we feel the casual golfer will appreciate that. Starting in late June Timber Ridge Golf Club will also start Junior and Ladies clinics ran by head pro Tom Mulka.

Other improvements and changes include:

  • 46 New Electric Golf Carts
  • A Full Service Pro Shop
  • Brand New Golf Balls at the Updated Driving Range
  • Crushed Stone Cart Paths
  • New Website

For only $20 with cart on the weekdays and $25 with cart on the weekends, Timber Ridge Golf Club is a course you may want to add to your play list in 2011. They also participate on the GolfLocal Discount Card saving you even more money.
