Changes Plentiful At Braemar Country Club & More Too Come

Posted by Golf Local On August - 18 - 2010

Earlier this summer, Braemar Country Club was purchased by brothers Steve & Walt Pavlovych of Hilton, NY.  After spending most of their lives in the Tool & Die Industry, they were ready for a challenge; and a challenge is what they got.

Braemar Country Club always had the potential to be an elite course, but after many years of neglect, the course became run down and outdated. That didn’t stop Steve and Walt though.  They saw something special in this golf course and knew that with some time and hard work they could bring it back to the type of course it should have been all along.

Their first order of business was to make improvements that would present an immediate impact. The brothers started out by fixing the run down sand traps that encompass much of the course. They removed all the old sand, increased the size of the traps, and edged around them. They added over 200 tons of professional grade golf course sand making them more playable and visually appealing. Walt stated that the golfers were very appreciative of the new sand but joked that they now would have to improve their game to hit out of “real” sandtraps. Michael Leahy of Walworth said “I love the new sandtraps. The bright white sand gives the course a totally different look.”

The next order of business was to trim all the low hanging branches on each tree throughout the course.  The goal was to help speed up play, eliminate the number of loss balls for their customers, and give the course a more cleanly and maintained appearance. Much of this work was performed by the high school and college students that work for Braemar Country Club each season. The brothers also added flower beds near the tee boxes, filled in the low spots that were present in each fairway, fixed the pot holes on the cart paths, and turned on the irrigation system that many of the seasonal employees didn’t know even existed.

In just under 2 months, Braemar Country Club has experienced more changes than ever before.  They are currently in the process of remodeling the inside and outside of both the current pro shop and the restaurant. The outside of each building has been painted and cedar shake siding has been added at the peak of each building. The women’s bathroom was completely remodeled with the men’s bathroom to follow. The inside of the pro shop and restaurant was painted giving it a nice clean appearance. Both Walt and Steve said they want to create a private course atmosphere at a public course price. Joe Pagano of Greece loves the changes so far. He said “I have played here more in the last 2 months than I have in the last 5 years. I love the changes and can’t wait to see what the future holds for this course.”

The restaurant/bar is now open Monday thru Friday, offering a fish fry on Friday’s.  With the ability to accommodate 60 -70 people, Walt and Steve are excited to know they have the capabilities to host large gatherings. They also have a hot dog stand that is open throughout the day that offers a quick lunch or snack.  On the course, you can grab an ice cold drink from one of the cart girls that drive up and down the fairways.

Some other future improvements include:

 - 50 new electric carts arriving in mid August
 - Large patio off the 18th green
 - New hole signs and ball washers
 - More ponds and sandtraps
 - Increasing the course length
 - New putting green

With the all current improvements made, we recommend that you visit Braemar Country Club. Their weekday rates are $20 for 18 holes with a cart and only $25 on the weekend. They are currently offering an unlimited play membership for the remainder of the season for only $250. Contact the pro shop at 585-352-5360 to schedule your tee time today.

Course History

Oak Hill Country Club started out in 1901 as only 9 holes on 85 acres on the banks of the Genesee River.  The clubhouse was no more than a converted farm house.  By 1921 Oak Hill had doubled in size and had a new clubhouse, so when the University of Rochester proposed a land swap in 1921 it was a tough decision for members.  However, the country club decided to take the university up on their offer, and moved the club to a 355 acre plot in nearby Pittsford. This decision ended up benefiting Oak Hill, University of Rochester and the City of Rochester.

Now with triple the land of the old country club, Oak Hill had room for two 18-hole courses. Designed by Donald Ross, they became the East Course and the West Course. The East Course – which hosts the major tournaments – has had several changes made over the years, first by Robert Trent Jones Sr. in the early 1960′s and later (and more recently for the 1989 Open and 2003 PGA) by Tom Fazio and his design group. In 1941 the Times-Union, a local paper at the time posted a $5000 purse which attracted the greatest golfers in the world, including names such as Sam Snead, Walter Hagen, and Ben Hogan. This tournament, won by Snead, put Oak Hill on the national golf map. Several prestigious tournaments would be held at Oak Hill over the next 62 years, including six men’s major championships.

In 2009, the East Course was ranked 11th in Golf Digest’s list of America’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses.

Course Info

Locust Hill Country Club is located in the towns of Henrietta and Pittsford approximately five miles southeast of Rochester, New York. Locust Hill is a private full service country club that offers its membership a championship 18 hole golf course designed by the Scottish Pro and Architect Seymour Dunn. The club offers its members complete practice facilities, three hard surface tennis courts, two platform tennis courts, olympic sized swimming pool, a complete state-of-the-art fitness center, and full service dining room and banquet facilities.

Locust Hill Country Club is a full service, year round country club which provides a prestigious, yet friendly and welcoming environment for all of its members, their families, and their guests. By doing so, Locust Hill Country Club also provides a unique and desirable alternative to other country clubs.

Locust Hill Country Club originated in the summer of 1925 by thirty of the younger and more progressive business and professional men of Rochester and members of the Rochester Gyro club. They purchased from Frank Zornow the “Locust Hill Farm” – eighty-nine acres of farm land on the north side of Jefferson Road in Pittsford. The barn was converted into a Locker House, with a fully equipped Pro Shop, bag storage, showers, lockers, and lounge room where food was served. The farm house was made into the clubhouse with 40 lockers on the second floor for the lady players. The course initially featured nine excellent holes for golf.

The Club soon expanded to 225 members and in 1927 purchased 52 acres South of Jefferson Road. It expanded to eighteen holes following the same careful procedure as before, taking in the additional members required for financing the expansion, with these new members being allowed to extend their payments over a period of two years.

In 1984 the clubhouse underwent a $1 million dollar renovation that connected the main clubhouse and the locker room building with the addition of the main members dining room on the main level. A patio off the dining room was enclosed to create a separate bar area in 1991. The clubhouse received a complete $3million interior renovation in 1998 which included the addition of the three-story octogon “Loggia”.  The master plan for the clubhouse was completed in 2006 with an addition to the ballroom, a 2,000 state-of-the-art fitness center, and exterior decks and patios overlooking the golf course.

Locust Hill Country Club is the home of the Wegman’s Rochester International, an annual event on the LPGA Tour. The LPGA has competed on Locust Hill’s championship course every year since 1977. However, this year it will host the 2010 LPGA Championship presented by Wegmans starting June 21st with the Wegmans Pro-Am.

Locust Hill Country Club is proud of the fine quality of food and service offered to the membership. Executive Chef Jason Walker and his culinary team have crafted menus that range from comfortable and casual items on our Pub Menu to exciting and more cutting edge preparation and presentations on the main dinner menu.

The club offers the membership two comfortable dining rooms for a’la carte service with total seating for 160 people. Banquet facilities at Locust Hill will seat from 4 to 400 people.  The newly expanded and remodeled Ballroom with exterior decks overlooking the golf course offer an excellent venue for entertaining.  All banquets at Locust Hill must be for or sponsored by a member of the club.

Best Features

Locust Hill Country Club also has a very active schedule of golfing events, including:
